FAQ Yoga questions:
What happens in a Yoga Class?
In each class there will be the space for you to move at your own pace. Classes are open to all abilities. We will practise in a relaxed atmosphere using yoga postures to build strength and flexibility whilst releasing physical and mental tension. Yoga is about creating energy (prana) in the body not losing it so please don't push too hard. The poses should feel good, not bad. Yoga is different to other exercise as it is a mind-body practice. Classes encourage you to take a non-critical, non-judgemental attitude towards your body and to welcome in peace of mind. Welcome to meditation in motion!
What is a Yoga Practice?
Yoga teachers will often refer to "your practice," which means your individual experience with yoga as it develops over time. The wonderful thing about yoga is that your practice is always evolving and changing, so it never gets boring. The postures are often repeated, but your relationship with them changes over time. This is partly because your body gets to be stronger and more flexible. Also, you discover how to listen to your body and relax into the postures, and you learn to work with your energy levels as they present in that moment.
Is Yoga Just Stretching?
Yoga does stretch your muscles but it is very different to the warm-up stretches you may do at the gym. Yoga stretching is about alignment, relaxation and awareness as opposed to target driven stretching (for example touching the toes) or gymnastics. Asana (the Yogic name for the postures) are a physical and mental practice. So they do create strength and flexibility and build energy in the body like other exercises, but they also create peace of mind and relaxation as you learn to "let go".
I tried yoga before but it was really boring!
All I can say is you just need to find the right class for you because yoga is far from boring. Perhaps it was because you were in a class that was not physically challenging enough for you. I would put you in one of my more advanced classes where you felt challenged and the focus you need for the more advanced postures will leave no room for boredom!
I get neck, back and shoulder pain.. Can Yoga help with that?
For sure! A lot of pain comes from tension and poor posture. This could be to do with your job being desk based so you shoulders are consistently hunched, or perhaps you have a job where you are on your feet but frequently bent over, for example a massage therapist. It is really important to keep your back flexible and strong to counteract the stress from our jobs and everyday lives. As well as creating strength and flexibility, you also learn to relax and release tension. I noticed a huge difference in the tightness I used to feel around my shoulders when I started yoga - it completely disappeared.
Can I Do Yoga Even Though I'm Not Flexible?
Definitely. That is why you come to yoga - to keep your muscles supple. Also, people get confused and think that yoga is about showing off how flexible you are. This is NOT true. In your yoga class you learn to enjoy the stretches and release of tension in the body. Increased flexibility is just one of the many health benefits that come over time. So even if your muscles feel really really tight you will enjoy and benefit from the practice.
Will everyone be dressed in spandex and be mega flexible?
Not at all! Yoga is for all ages and all abilities. Dress code is "comfy as possible". I always try to keep a really friendly and non competitive atmosphere in my classes and have classes suitable for beginners where you will fit right in.
Can I Do Yoga at Home?
Yoga is a fantastic practice as it can be practiced just about anywhere once you have the basics. Beginners can greatly benefit from the advice of a qualified teacher, so it is advisable to attend lots of classes at the beginning to get you started.
Using yoga audios, videos, or visiting Sky exercise channel 275 for free classes on the telly, are excellent ways to begin a home practice. Whilst continuing to attend a class will help with ideas on sequencing and postures, which you can use to further benefit your home practice.
Will yoga help me sleep?
Are you the type of person that has sleepless nights and long days, where you find it really hard to concentrate at work? Then I really think yoga can help. Every yoga class I teach includes relaxation. I understand that for some people this is the most difficult part of the class, but practice makes perfect. Yogic relaxation helps create the relaxation response in the body that will aid sleep, energy, and the immune system. Even if you think you have a really busy mind, I promise you: stick with the practice and you will notice a huge difference in your ability to relax.
